TOP TEN [10] MOVIES YOU MUST SEE IN DECEMBER


With the holiday season in full swing, November most certainly did not disappoint with back to back hits like marvel’s “Doctor Strange” Animated film “Moana” and the Warner Bros prequel to Harry potter with “Fantastic beasts and where to find them”. All of last month’s biggest hits were well received by both critiques and fans.

December also has an equally intriguing number of releases in store for movie faithfuls. From much anticipated blockbusters to smaller independent films. This December, movie lovers will have a bounty of A-list award contenders from which to choose as hollywood drops a number of high-profile films into theatres all in an effort to qualify for next year’s Oscars (Academy Award). Here are ten movies to check out this December:

• JACKIE

Jackie is a 2016 biographical film by Chilean director Pablo Larrain and written by Noah Oppenheim.The film stars academy award winner Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, Peter Sarsgaard as Robert F. Kennedy, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. The film follows Jackie during her final days as First lady following the assassination of husband John F. Kennedy. Based on the buzz coming from this film, I predict another Oscar nomination for Natalie Portman and also for the film. Movie was$ released on December 2nd.

• LA LA LAND

La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle notably known for his award winning short film ‘’Whiplash’’. Its title ‘’La La Land’’ is a reference to a nickname for Los Angeles. The film stars Emma Stones as the lead actress and Ryan Gosling as the lead actor. It is the third film to feature Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as lovers, following Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad. The film follows two dreamers in actress Mia and Jazz musician Sebastian as they fall in love and try to balance their careers with the bond that they share. This one’s certainly an Oscar worthy and fans of Gosling and Stones would itching for this one. Movie is set to be released on December 9th.

• ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Rogue One is a 2016 upcoming American epic space opera film directed by Gareth Edwards known for the 2014 reboot of “Godzilla” and written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. It will be the first Star Wars Anthology film, a standalone story set shortly before the events of the Original Star Wars. It stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. It follows a group of Rebel spies on a mission to steal design schematics for the Death Star. In addition, speculation is centered on what new light the film may shine on the many questions left unanswered after last year’s “Stars Wars: The Force Awakens” It is scheduled to be released on December 16.

• COLLATERAL BEAUTY

Will Smith, who starred as “Deadshot” in summer’s hit “Suicide Squad” and now the A-list actor returns for “Collateral Beauty” a new drama from director David Frankel known for his works with “The Devil wears Prada.” He stars as an advertising executive who aims to cope with personal tragedy by writing letters to love, time and death. Yet, he’s shocked when the embodiment of these very concepts pay him a visit. It also stars Keira Knightley, Jacob Latimore and Helen Mirren. The film is set to be released on December 16.

• ASSASSIN’S CREED

This one promises to be an action packed adventurous film based on the video game franchise of the same name. Movie is directed by Justin Kurzel. “Assasins Creed” could just be the most anticipated movie in December. It stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cottilard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. This anticipated big screen version of the best-selling video game series sees fassbender plays criminal Callum Lynch, a descendant of an Assassin from 15th century Spain who is recruited to participate in the Animus Project and relive his ancestor’s memories. Fans of the video game would absolutely love this film. It is set to be released on December 21.

• PASSENGERS

It is an upcoming American romantic science fiction thriller film directed by Morten Tyldum known for The Imitation game and written by Jon Spaihts. It stars Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) and comic actor Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy). Lawrence and Pratt star as two inhabitants of a spacecraft making a 120-year journey to a distant planet. However, a malfunction wakes them up decades earlier than planned, leaving the two to fend for themselves and discover what went wrong. It is set to be released on December 21.

•A MONSTER CALLS

This is a 2016 fantasy drama film directed by J.A Bayona and written by Patrick Ness based on his eponymous novel. It stars Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Lewis Macdougall and Liam Neeson (Taken). It is a dark children’s fable about a young boy with a dying mother (Rogue One’s Felicity Jones) who befriends a tree-like monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) that acts out the kids apoplectic impulses. It is set to be released December 23.

• SILENCE

Legendary film-maker Martin Scorsese known for movies like [The Aviator, Shutter Island, Wolf Of Wall] street is back at it with this American historical drama film written by Jay Cocks based on the novel of the same name by Shusaku Endo. The film stars Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spiderman), Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano and Ciaran Hinds. It stars Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver as two portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to 17th century Japan to retrieve their mentor. It is set to be released on December 23.

• FENCES

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reprise their stage roles for this film adaptation of Fences. The movie, which follows a working-class married couple in 1950’s Pittsburgh. The film is directed by Washington himself, the film has already gained rave reviews for its stark portrayal of a marriage in crisis and is poised to become one of this years top award contenders specifically for Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder). It is set to be released on December 25.

• HIDDEN FIGURES

It is an upcoming 2016 American Biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. The film has an all-star cast of Taraji P. Henson [Empire], Octaves Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons. Taraji P. Henson best known for her role as feisty Cookie Lyon on the Fox series “Empire” stars as Katherine Goble, one of the brightest creative minds at NASA during the space race. Along with friends and colleagues Dorothy Vaughan(Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson(Janelle Monae), Goble attempts to prove herself in a time when African American women had an especially difficult battle to receive recognition. It is set to be released on December 25.
